The Exposure Photomerge is a simple HDR (High Dynamic Range) tool. Suddenly that picture of St Mark's in Venice can be cleared of all those pesky tourists! Just take several shots of the same scene over a short period then use Scene Cleaner to stack the shots together and subtract the changes between each exposure. If you've ever tried to shoot a building without passers-by getting in the way, then you'll love it. Recompose uses scene splicing to chop out slices of a scene to bring, say, individuals closer together in a shot, and it does so without any distortion. All three of these come straight from Photoshop CS4. More interesting though, are the Recompose tool, Scene Cleaner and Exposure Photomerge functions. So what are the new and meaty features that come with Elements 8? This third option takes you by the hand and offers lots of help and sickly effects that you'll either love or hate depending on how proficient you are with image editing.

You can either select Edit Full for total manual control, Edit Quick, which is actually very good for making quick and basic changes to your photos, or Edit Guided. On the right of the interface are three workflow tabs. Fortunately you can lighten the interface by ticking a box in the Preferences. It's a good idea but it can be a strain on the eyes because some of the dark-coloured tools in the Toolbox can blend into the background. However, it helps you adjust your photos properly by surrounding them with a neutral background.
